The Bowes Museum is home to a collection
of art brought together by the Bowes family over 100 years ago. The
collection includes paintings by Canaletto, Goya and Turner as well as a
huge range of ceramics. You will also find a collection of costumes and a
local history section. One of the main attractions for children is the
remarkable silver swan which can be seen moving at a particular time each
day. There are also puzzles, activity trails to do and period clothes to dress up in.
Older children living locally might be
interested in joining the Merlin's Kids Club (for 7-12 year olds). The
Museum is the first museum to receive the Investing in Children Award.
(Investors in
Children is a County Durham organisation funded by Durham County Council,
aimed at improving the lives of children and young people by making the
world a better place to grow up in.)
